  • What Does Your Professional Profile Photo Say About You?

If you’ve been holed up in the same role/job for the last ten years, and you’re comfortable in the belief you’ll likely be there for twenty more, than your LinkedIn photo might not be worth updating. But if you’re someone seeking the attention of a hiring manager, future C-suite colleagues, business partners or talent recruiters, then you need to pay attention to what kind of professional that headshot is selling to the world. I’ve come across ambitious careerists who don’t understand the value of adding a strong, engaging portrait to their LinkedIn profile page. One that tells the story of the leader they want to be seen as. You need to project an image that sells you as a the right kind of executive. Say for example, you want to go for a Chief Technology Officer position, but your photo screams quiet, mousy, get-the-job-done-guy, who hides out in the back office staring at computer screens all day with his team of two. If you want to look the part of the CTO, your headshot needs to project business leader, someone who is capable of foresight and innovation. It should help you look relatively charismatic and amiable; a confident communicator who can interface with clients easily and directly. Sure, you might still be working on developing these new leadership skills. But who’s gonna know? For those who are job hunting on LinkedIn, or forwarding contacts and connections to your profile, get into the game and do it right. Gone are the days of the generic $99 white background corporate catch all look. What do you want to be known for? What do you want your image to say about what kind of person is coming to the grown up table? Your resumé is only half the equation. Invest in the other half and stand out for what you believe about yourself. • Family Shoot in DTLA

Perhaps one of the most fun shoots I enjoyed this year was hanging out with Jessica and her little brood in downtown Los Angeles. Being around her kids, and her super chill and playful husband, Cody, was certainly an end-year holiday highlight for me. Their energy level combined with their vibe really made capturing special moments easy and natural. We started at Hauser & Wirth – but had to leave due to a no-photo shoot policy I didn’t know about, walked around for bit then ended up at California Plaza. The kids enjoyed being in an environment that was familiar, and at the parents’ savvy prompting, engaged and played with each other and with us without any falsity or fuss. What resulted were some of the best portraits I’ve taken of young ones and their parents. I did try for some traditional family poses but they ended goofing up in the best way possible. As I’ve written before, trying to pose children is really an exercise in futility. We played around, got a little silly and created more natural interactions that truly reflected their family’s personality. Jessica definitely embraced my wanting a more candid, often humorous approach to photographing kids and family dynamics. She agreed that messy and chaotic is sometimes the most beautiful reflection of family life. We love the photos this created. Here are just a few. #Portraitphotographer #FreshLook #CelebrateYourLife #Outdoors #FamilyPortraits #Familyphotos #CandidPortraits

  • Pumpkin Patch Love

I'm on this quest to capture children being children in situations and environments that feel more natural than a studio. I love to photograph them in a candid, documentary style because I feel these portraits truly show them off in some of the most authentically beautiful and funny ways. So on a crazy busy Sunday afternoon I met the lovely Herrera family at Shawn's pumpkin patch in mid-town. I don't know why I thought it would offer the right setting for doing portraits but I was focused on providing these two cutie pies with an experience they could enjoy as much as possible. Their parents, Deanna and Jared, were not only patient but super cool about my running around with the kids in a sea of people. We even squeezed in a family portrait for good measure. We managed to make the best of it, but I think next time we'll hit the beach! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! • Shooting For The Dream

I have a special fondness for Jeff. He is a repeat client with a kind and beautiful soul, and we have common professional history that led us both to bloom as career artists, he with his music and I, with my photography. This time around, instead of establishing Jeff as a business development executive, we set out to showcase his brand as a musician and recording artist. Jeff is launching his first solo album this winter called The Big Dream. In his words, "the songs all have themes of beauty, positivity, helping others triumph over adversity and chasing one’s own “Big Dream”. So we needed to come up with cover art that reflects Jeff's artistic brand and create images to support his ongoing social media and public relations outreach. Our shoot spread out across two afternoons, the first around Melrose Ave in Hollywood, for a bit of rocker grit. And the second, at a beach near his home in Hermosa. His energy is definitely more sea than graffiti. But I’m glad we didn’t skimp on taking our time to make the best of both locations. These are just some of my personal favs. You can learn more about Jeff and his music at https://jeffcbaker.com To book your own lifestyle session, contact me at 310.622.4580 or email nicolette@NJPphotography.com #Portraitphotography #Professionalphotographer #Sellingyourbrand #Howtomarketyourimage #Magazinestyleportraits #PersonalBrand #Contentmarketing #CreativePortraits

  • Celebrating Your Life With A Boudoir Shoot

"If you want something you've never had before, you have to be willing to do something you've never done before." - N. Peseschkian. Becky is from a small, relatively conservative town in West Virginia. She is a devoted mom and a loving wife, who is also, at the age of 44, finally winning her battle against depression. She got in touch with me in late July, one week before a celebratory “try new things” trip to Los Angeles. She wanted to know about booking a glamour and boudoir session. Her email read: I can't stand to have my picture taken. But have always wanted a reason to dress up, look nice...I want to overcome my fear of pictures and prove to myself that I can look good... We spoke for the first and only time on a Saturday. By Sunday evening she had photos of new outfits for me advise her on and by Tuesday, two days before her flight, she'd hit Victoria Secret and bought lingerie for the first time in her life. She was a woman on a mission, committed to pushing her own personal boundaries. This is Becky's experience in her own words: I suffered with anxiety and depression but it was getting better. And I realized how much I was missing out on life. I decided to take a trip that would be about doing things that make me uncomfortable. I had never flown before and I wanted to go to LA on my own. My friends and family were nervous but I knew I needed this time out. I have never been daring. I was raised with this idea that you don’t show yourself. I was always self conscious about my body. It took me 17 years before I was comfortable being naked in front of my husband. So I was considering doing a boudoir shoot and that’s how I found Nicolette. To say doing a photoshoot is out of my element is an understatement. I don’t wear makeup. My hair is always in a ponytail. I basically live in sweats and t-shirts. And I’ve never seen a photo of myself that I liked. I’ve always thought I looked twice my size. I know it’s in my head but I could never get past it. When we got to the studio I was a little nervous but that didn’t last long. Nicolette was patient and my being photographed first in a dress really helped to put me at ease. When it came time to switch into the lingerie, I had no doubts at all that I wanted to do this. I didn’t know what to do or how to act sexy and feminine but she made it easy. By the the third outfit, I was having the time of my life! Our session flew by. At the portrait reveal, instead of not finding one photo I liked, I couldn’t find one I didn’t like. For the first time in my life, I loved the way I looked in my photos. So now I tell women, LOVE your body. Love every roll, scar, imperfection that you see because these are not imperfections. They tell your story. They make you who you are today. And you are amazing. Trust me, this experience will help you see yourself for who you are - beautiful. Becky exemplifies the reasons why I do what I do. She is a survivor who deserved to experience herself with fresh eyes and a fresh heart. She rocked her session, and I’m so grateful to have been granted the privilege of being her photographer. These are just some of the photos we created together. • Branding Headshots Are Not Just For LinkedIn

I recently did a personal branding session for an industrious entrepreneur called Lukas Resheske who hired me to create a portfolio of images for his business website and marketing collateral. Lukas is a successful author and copywriter with clients spanning Fortune 500 companies, hot new start-ups and small businesses across the globe. For his session we wanted to create a portfolio of images that showcased his approachable personality, down-to-earth manner and a fresh look that distinguishes him in a low-key but high-stakes marketplace. Lukas’ reputation precedes him so we had to make sure his visuals matched that in genuine ways. Our session took place on-location near his home in Marina Del Rey where we found some background variety that played off his rugged good looks and personal style. To learn more about Lukas’ business and how he is using some of the images from our shoot visit: https://www.lukasresheske.com/ "Nic, we're in love with them! • Over Fifty & Fabulous! A Birthday Glamour Shoot

My mother-in-law turned 65 this summer, and we celebrated this lifetime milestone with an in-residence glamour shoot at her lovely home in Graz, Austria. Iris is a natural stunner who often puts my spouse and I to shame with her ability to look richly stylish with seemingly little effort. She is an artist with a passion for beauty and elegance, which are reflected throughout her home, her wardrobe and the property’s lush, colorful garden which she has cultivated, curated and designed for over 15 years. That is why we decided to shoot in her own environment rather than a studio space. It serves as an authentic backdrop to her life and her personality, for she is as much a part of its beauty as it is a reflection of hers. The session went over four hours during one hot afternoon in late August, and in spite of the laden humidity, she never once faltered in her energy or enthusiasm. These are just some of the results of her fabulous-over-fifty session. • Three Generation Glamour Shoot

It started as a Christmas gift for their mom, who hasn't been professionally photographed since her first pregnancy over thirty years ago. Maria is a youthful matriarch whose smile is radiant and all encompassing. Her family lives near Lake Arrowhead, two hours east of Los Angeles. Although it took us a few months to finally get the chance to work together, their session has been one of my favorites to date. Professional hair and makeup, multiple outfit and background changes and a late afternoon appearance by their menfolk, provided us with an album’s worth of incredible keepsakes they can cherish for decades to come. We made sure to capture each woman's individuality as well as their roles within the family. We also snapped some solos of Maria’s two year-old granddaughter, who frankly, stole the show. These beautiful people made the time and investment to celebrate their unity and each other in a way that will last lifetimes. It was such an honor to serve their legacy. #Portraitphotography #Familyphotos #FamilyPortraits #Portraitphotographer #Magazinestyleportraits #Glamourshoot #Glamour #CelebrateYourLife #CelebrateYourSelf

  • BTS Beach Shoot in Playa Del Rey

Glamour for me is whatever environment and wardrobe enables my clients to feel and look beautiful. • Showcasing a Chef at the Hollywood Farmer’s Market

Hailley Field is an entrepreneur and a co-member of the Quilt women's community in Los Angeles. We met during a hosted event a few weeks ago and hit it off right away. She is the owner and creator of HomeCooked, a globally-influenced gastronomy service that brings a knowledgeable and creative pair of helping hands to one’s own kitchen. Hailley will come to you any night of the week and whip up an amazing meal with whatever you have lying around the kitchen. It's truly a "chef-on-demand" service like no other in Los Angeles. In addition to traveling the world and having worked within various professional and private cooking environments since her early twenties, she is a self-taught business owner who knows the value of establishing a strong personal brand. She is the face (and hands) of her company, and we needed to demonstrate not only her skills but her bright and sunny personality, which is such a big part of her success and loyal following. A planned cooking demonstration at the Hollywood Farmer’s market offered us the perfect opportunity to showcase Hailley doing what she does best, while creating dynamic visual content that speaks and engages with audiences across her website and social media feeds. She'll be able to use use these images for weeks and months to come. Here are just a handful of some of the photos we created for HomeCooked and her site, shecanhelpyou.com To learn more about Hailley visit www.shecanhelpyou.com and read her interview at VoyageLA.com. • Wine, Wisdom & Vision – Annual Fundraiser for AIDS Research and Education

The Entertainment Aid Alliance (renamed as of 2018), a nonprofit dedicated to funding research, treatment and prevention programs for HIV and AIDS, held their annual fundraiser at the prestigious Roosevelt hotel in Los Angeles. • A Stylish Birthday Party With Views

In hot pink and full of rambunctious energy, Mary W. is a fiesty, well-traveled, fun loving 80 years young with a heart of gold and an acute sense of humor. She is an influential matriarch who has shaped and continues to impact the lives of her loved ones. Without a doubt, this group of adoring loyalists knows exactly how lucky they are to count her as auntie and friend. When I photograph private events, especially birthday parties or family reunions, the love and happiness are often so contagious I’m left buoyant for days. This gathering was especially heart-warming with roundtables of funny stories and poignant moments shared that paid homage to her rather unconventional and beneficent existence. They hosted Mary’s birthday lunch in a private dining room at the Hotel Angeleno. Adjacent to Beverly Hills and sitting below the beautiful Getty Museum, this boutique hotel is distinctive by its circular shape and incredible panoramic views of Santa Monica and environs. In addition to the requisite group shot and interactive candids, we made sure to get Mary one-on-one with each guest for a celebratory print album and capture some details of the lovely decorations and place settings so carefully put together by her friends, Mark and John.
