Beyond the Firm: Building a Personal Brand That Feels Authentically You

There comes a point in many a professional’s career when they realize their reputation has grown beyond the walls of their workplace.
A magazine editor asks for a headshot. A conference organizer requests a speaker bio. An association invites you to join their board. A podcast host needs a promotional portrait. Suddenly, the question isn't simply, Do I have a good photo? It becomes Does this image represent the professional I've become?
For many accomplished individuals, the answer is often, no.
This is where my recent client, Kulia Warner, found herself. Although she works at a law firm serving corporations and financial institutions, the photographs she needed weren't for the firm's website. They were for articles she was writing, speaking engagements, her LinkedIn bio, and the growing collection of opportunities that reflect her distinct professional voice.

Those opportunities weren't replacing her role at the firm—they were expanding it. And she needed photographs to represents the broader professional identity she was intentionally building—one that would accompany her public engagements as a thought leader in her field.
She explained: "As someone who came to law later in life, I was at a crossroads of how to present myself. I was regularly being asked for a photo to accompany an article or panel and instead of professional photos taken for the firm website, I was choosing between snapshots from conferences or selfies. I didn’t want to use AI to make my selfie into something professional when I knew real artists could do so much better. I bit the bullet of spending on myself and went for it, and could not be happier. "
Our collaboration began with an hour-long phone call. Kulia arrived with plenty of ideas. She knew herself well. She had a visual point of view. She cared deeply about authenticity. My role wasn't to help her invent her brand. It was to help her translate it into photographs.
We discussed the audiences she wanted to reach, the opportunities she was preparing for, and the impression she hoped to leave when someone encountered her profile online or saw her speaker bio. She had a Pinterest board of well curated inspiration. Together we narrowed down wardrobe options and selected a natural-light studio in Downtown Los Angeles that reflected the modern, stylish aesthetic she wanted to project.
From our first conversation, it was clear that she was energetic, quick-thinking, and wonderfully expressive. She also has a working knowledge of photography and a distinct visual sensibility of her own. So rather than trying to control every pose or expression, I simply created the right framework for her to confidently bring herself into the session.
As Kulia says, ”I felt supported with clear instructions, a balm to my naturally over-thinking about new things. I enjoyed the day-of a lot, we spent time relaxing and talking while I got my makeup done and shooting was like friends hanging out and sharing ideas. I felt like we got the beat of the song right and were all grooving together."

For me, these sessions aren't about asking someone to fit into a preconceived idea of professionalism. They're about fostering an environment where the qualities that already help make a person memorable naturally emerge.
Telling your story your way
One of the most insightful observations Kulia shared after our session was about self-ownership: "As a Gen X woman, a lot of my middle age has been chronicled online. Photos holding my child, shared Facebook shares from relatives, and I wanted to make a shift to be the one telling my own stories through photos."
Thoughtfully designed branding photography allows you to decide what chapter of your story people see first. One of the biggest differences between a headshot session and a personal branding session is perspective. A headshot often answers today's needs. A branding session prepares you for tomorrow's opportunities.
Kulia’s session was to build a library of images she could confidently use now and for future opportunities she couldn't yet predict.
She says, ”I have so many in the queue for the next opportunity that I feel really prepared and more willing to raise my hand to participate in new projects, knowing that sharing a photo won't be a drag of scrolling through my selfies to find one that seems
professional-ish."
That confidence is the real value of owning professional, beautiful and authentic images of oneself. They finally align your visual presence with the credibility you've worked so hard to achieve.
Becoming more recognizable as yourself
Every session is different because every person brings a different story, career, and vision.
What they have in common is this: the strongest personal brands aren't carefully manufactured. They're thoughtfully revealed. Whether you're an attorney, consultant, executive, nonprofit leader, founder, or creative professional, your goal is to become immediately recognizable as the person the world already experiences.

As Kulia perfectly puts it: “[A personal branding session] is a no-brainer, investing in yourself gives you the confidence and energy to show up in professional spaces as your full self. Don’t let other people present you through the lens of their brand, take the lead and decide how you want the professional world to perceive you.”
So if you’re finding yourself at a point in your career where your photographs no longer reflect the professional you've become—or the opportunities you're preparing for—I'd love to help. Together, we can create a collection of images that feels aligned, intentional, and unmistakably you. My goal is to help you visually communicate who you've become and where you're going, so your image support the reputation you're building long before you walk into the room.
